Who Are You?

One of the hardest questions someone ever asked me was “Who are you?”. Now granted, I was very young and still figuring that out. But every year, each new level of growth I achieved, I always remembered that question. I was in my early twenties then, but even now nearly ten years later I still recall how unprepared—and how unable—I was to answer that. The truth is, there are so many layers to who we are. You can only answer this question based on your current mental state, level of emotional intelligence and progress in self mastery. When you take into consideration that these very things fluctuate and we are (or should be) in a constant state of change, you will realize that we only know ourselves to the extent of which we've self reflected.

Ironically, there are several wrong answers to this question. You are not your job, your hobbies, your family duties, your accomplishments or your trauma. You are your dreams, your experiences, your core values and your passions. While it may take some time before you actually have an answer you're comfortable with, I do love watching my transformation coaching clients' answers evolve throughout our work together. I think that's the beauty of it. Your answer will always change and you'll realize just how much you've learned and changed about yourself every time someone asks you.

If there are people around you who have the capacity for these kinds of conversations, you may be surprised by how they light up the first time you hit them with this question. Not only is this a time to mutually bare your soul to someone you cherish, it's an opportunity to deepen the connection and really see each other. That's how healing starts. Peeling back the layers of human-ness to discover the raw, real spirit that lies in our core.
